How do we start?
One of the main basics for a health conscious life is health conscious nutrition, closely followed by any sort of body exercise, otherwise called sports. They walk side by side: only nutrition is not enough for a fit body, as much as only doing sports will not present the expected goals without conscious nutrition.
We were made for sports
Just the way we look back to our roots when it comes to nutrition, we have to look back to our bodies biological instincts: a human body was originally made for a couple of hours of movement per day. Let us just observe different groups of people still living in their natural origins: they move around all day long. But let me come closer, let us just look at our children. Why does it come so easy for all of us to encourage our children to do sport all the time? Why are we so happy when they get all sweaty playing catch me if you can, or when they spend hours on the climbing frame?
Because we know it’s good for them, and the same formula is relevant for us adults as well.
How do we find motivation?
If we can change our nutrition, we can also change our body activities as well. If we decide to walk the healthy road, we have already laid the starting stone for motivation, the decision to want to change. This is the first step.
When do we start?
Tomorrow. Let us not try and escape the decision, or try and connect it to some other deadline. Motivation fades easily, if we start to feed it too late. As soon as we have made up our mind for any kind of sports, we should try and start as soon as possible. Let us also treat it just like any other naturally occurring activity of our every day life. If it ends up last on our to do list, it will most likely be sacrificed first.
My personal experience: when I moved out to a residential area, I did not know the possibilities and the infrastructure around me. I did know one thing though, that I want to get moving. So, I made up my mind to go running. I put my t-shirt, and leggings on, and ran down to the glade around the corner.
Tip: in the beginning, it is advisable to choose a kind of sports, that does not require investing in expensive equipments, gym cards or doesn’t require too much time of your life.
What kind of sports is good for you?
We have to spend some time to find out. However, I personally believe, that we have to compromise, as always, since as an adult, we have many other obligations we have to fulfill. We might not have the possibility to do what we really really would like to. In case you are the rare couple of percent who can do it, good on you. Consciously we have to choose an activity, that fits in to our daily routines. On the other hand, I believe, that once we start something wholeheartedly, and we feel we are getting better and better at it, we will find ourselves loving doing it. Let’s not judge too soon.
My personal experience: Choosing running was totally a conscious decision from the beginning. It was a liberating choice as a working mother with small children, since I did not have to adapt to either place, time or trainer. I am my own trainer, I can go running wherever I want, even if I only have 45 minutes at the time. Within a short time, say about half a year, it became a passion, and by now years later, I do it from an inner urge, not because I have to. The same arguments speak for gyms, as they give a great variety in possibilities for the those who seek it, and let’s face it, gyms pop up literally everywhere nowadays.
Tip: be sure in the beginning, to always start with cardio exercises, as these help to loose weight, and will at the same time increase your stamina, level your metabolism and blood flow. You have to build a solid ground, whereupon you may build further with different types of exercise. It is the same way, that we prepare a wall before painting. Let us help our body to healthy fitness!
Important issues to observe at the beginning, and at new beginnings
When dieting, gradualness and consistency are basics, the same applies for sports. Let’s keep our heads cool in the beginning. Let us be patient and restrained with our bodies. Especially in case we are struggling with obesity. As long as we have not gotten rid of the excess fat on our body, we should not start intensive “I will give everything” kind of workouts. We should not aim for running a marathon at once, nor should we pick the most extreme training pass from the schedule.
Our first and foremost aim should be to prepare our body for every day workouts. If you want to be physically sure, I would suggest a general medical examination as well.
My personal experience: I started with 5-6 kilometers, but let me underline, that already before that I had spent considerable time cardio workout at a gym 3 times / week. Today, during marathon training, a longer distance can be up to 35 kilometers. But one should not forget, that the 30 kilometer difference was achieved in 5 years of serious training, so I completed my first marathon after 5 years of preparation.
Tip: in my experience, a weekly 3 times workout is a minimum, however, I would more likely suggest 5 days. So for a complete beginner, regardless of age and weight, a weekly 3 times seriously committed workout would present your body with a firm base, in about 2-3 months.
What should we be expecting?
- visible change on our body: excess fat will disappear from those non wanted areas. (thanks to a 1 h running session, we could be getting rid of as much as 700-800 calories)
- firmer skin and leaner muscles overall
- we like to dress up, but believe me, you will not have problems with taking your clothes off either on the beach. Your diet will help with managing extra kilograms, however our bodies real features will be thanks to our leaner muscles.
- in general, we will have more energy for the day: our brain produces not one but two happy hormones while running.
- stress levels decrease thanks to exercise.
- those who exercise on a regular basis, are more efficient at work as well: better stamina, concentration, better feeling of duty, discipline and even creativity.
- finally we have more time to spend on ourselves, and at the same time we are more patient with others too.
- our children will have better understanding for the importance of doing exercises on a regular basis, if they have a parents good example close at hands.
Sport brought the wind of change for me, aslo. I became stronger and more committed in every field of life.
My personal experience: I have taken liking to monotonous sports, as they give time and space for our own thoughts, without distraction from external impulses. In this day and age, we spend far to little time with active meditation.
Tip: let us not fear doing sports on our own. We should rather use the time to sort out our inner thoughts.
I am sure, that the activity you choose for yourself, and manage to fit in your daily routines will bring on a positive change in your life. The most important thing is that the physical equilibrium, will affect the harmony of your soul. I don’t know anyone who does not aspire for that. Let us use the advantages of this instrument – here meaning of course any kind of sports activity, that is basically available to everyone. The good news is, that you don’t have to belong to any high flying society, or be a certain age, or have to spend a lot of money on it. It simply is a decision, some creativity, and good logistics. Go for it!
